History: The land around Butterfield was described as rolling prairies diversified and enriched by beautiful lakes of pure water and numerous creek and rivers that flow through. Later to attract settlers, the area was described as the soil that is rich, dark, colored loam, varying from 2-4 feet in depth.


Butterfield’s history is not neatly compiled in a book. Rather most of the history comes from a variety of sources and is pieced together some by memoirs and some by memory. More on the history of Butterfield including how the City got its' name can be found here.

Butterfield – Small Town Living

Butterfield is located in south western Minnesota along Highway 60, which links Minneapolis/St. Paul to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Butterfield is situated between St. James, MN, the Watonwan County seat and Mt. Lake. We are located approximately 45 miles from Mankato, 120 miles from Minneapolis, and 105 miles from Sioux Falls, SD.
